Remember that time some folks were attempting to trap Jesus with a LOADED question about paying taxes? Sure they flattered him with some fluffy, “Oh you’re so great” talk. But then BOOM! If he answered one way, Jesus could be arrested and punished for breaking the law. If he answered another way, he could lose the support of his followers.
Jesus’s answer was EPIC!
“Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And give to God what belongs to God.” (Matthew 22:21)
He had asked them to give him a coin used to pay the tax. They brought him a denarius, and in his hand, he held this small object made of metal, stamped with an image of a man. He asked them whose image, and whose name was inscribed on the coin. “Caesar’s”, they replied. And he replied by saying, well then give it to Caesar.
But did you catch the second part of his answer? The part where he said give to God what belongs to God? Like the coin, His image is stamped on us…
“And it is God…who has also put his seal on us…” (2Cor 1:21-22)
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Gen 1:27)
Oh wow! God’s image is pressed and sealed on to each one of us! We BELONG to God! And we must respond by giving to Him what belongs to Him; ourselves.
