Text to Will: “This is the house that you built…”
After we polished the floors, and fluffed the pillows, it was an absolute JOY to send Will a text message with the photos saying, “This is the house that you built! Thank you.”
His reply: “No, thank you for letting me be a part of something great.”
This is one of those “pinch me” moments. Ok, so let us tell you about this house…
This home was a combination of a purchase and a donation. We purchased the home, paying off the existing loan on this property. Then the Seller obtained an Appraisal Report to determine the charitable donation amount which they can use on their tax returns. In some cases, the charitable donation can be used for up to five years. If you would like to know more about Gifts of Property, you can read about it here.
So that, in itself is pretty cool! But then we met Will. You see, we had been talking with Jessica McLemore, a DVOP Specialist at WorkNet EDD when she gave us Will’s resume. Will is a U.S. Veteran who had been unemployed for a few months. Will has a dream of becoming a General Contractor, and WE have a dream of helping him! And THAT is how we begin our Workforce Development Initiative. How do we start? One house at a time… one life at a time. Will was teamed up with Poncho, Josefina, and Victor who took him under their wing, and got him off to a great start! (If you follow us on Facebook, you have probably seen us enjoying tacos together here). We will continue to work with Will, and look forward to the day we are launching him and his new business! Which will probably be in no time at all, since he has gone from demolition, to building fences, to hanging drywall, to taking care of the dry rot and pest repairs in about five weeks!
This is just the start! There is so much more to tell you, but we’ll save that for another time. God is good.
