“Learned Helplessness” – Break Free!
To restrain a baby elephant, it’s trainers chain it to a large, heavy stake that is driven deep in to the ground. The baby tries with all its might to break free. Day after long day, hour after long hour, it tries to move left, and tug right, pulling with all its strength to get that large stake to lift from the ground. To no avail, the baby elephant finally accepts its defeat, and gives up trying.
The baby elephant then grows in to a beautiful, large, strong adult elephant easily restrained not by a large stake, but by a small tent peg. Because it was convinced, by painful, exhausting experience that it was bound, it never tries to see if anything had changed. As an adult, the elephant is not bound by a stake and chains, but by a psychological force; a “Learned Helplessness”.
But this is not the life God would have for us. Our past defeats do not lock us in to a life of being chained, dominated by the forces that kept us restrained. No! When we see that it was God Himself who created us, we see that He put His value in each of us, and no one, and no thing can take away what the Creator has given. And when we understand that joy comes from the Lord, no one and no thing can rob us. And when we know from Who we get our strength, no one and no thing can bind us down!
So break free, you who needed to hear this! By the Power that is Jesus, you are no longer bound!
